Lariab’s paintings explore “the subconscious” and how certain behavioral tendencies can take on melancholic undertones, especially when they are influenced by fluctuating subconscious forces. Building on this, through her work, she addresses how these tendencies that are the manifestation of a number of seemingly opposing forces, ultimately define our personalities.
As we move through life, the depth of one’s subconscious - one’s feelings, thoughts, experiences, memories, desires and pain - expands. Our subconscious thoughts enter our consciousness sporadically through dreams and habits, though we are generally unaware of the extent to which our personalities and behavior patterns are defined by aspects of our lives that are ironically enough, predominantly inaccessible to us.
